To start
this article out, for the sake of this article, I want to settle the never
ending discussion – should you take vitamins or not.
Now, back in the day, when food was all clean
and good, you really didn't need any vitamins or supplements. Now days, that
are only the case if you grow your own food, eat your own animals, and cook
them correctly. Otherwise it's very hard to get all the nutrients and minerals
that you need, out of just pure food that you buy at a grocery store.
The reason
for this is the fact that we are 7 billion on the planet, so we have to produce
food in a very industrial way, for every one to have food to buy. The
industrial way that we buy those foods, it makes them loose all the good nutrients.
Studies show that organic groceries have six times more nutrients, vitamins and
minerals than inorganic foods.
Now, this doesn't
mean that you need to start buying bags full of vitamins and supplements. You
just need to find out which nutrients it is, that you are missing out on. You
can then get those vitamins by a supplement of some sort. To find out what it
is, that you are missing; you need to do some tests in lab. Blood and urine
tests are the usual ones – they will show what vitamins you are in a deficiency
of.
Sometimes
there are specific medical conditions, when you need to take way more than the average
dose of a certain vitamin. In those cases, the only way you can do that is by
using supplements. I won't get into why someone would need to do that, or what
are those conditions, but let me just say – please do not self diagnose on that.
Obviously it’s
generally good, and better than taking a supplement, to just have a very good,
balanced diet. But really, even with that, you won’t have everything that you
need. Also, a rule you can always use with most vitamins – it’s better to have
more than less. This is especially true with vitamins like D3 and a selenium supplement.
A good diet
is a base for a functioning body, same as few basic vitamins are a base for a
healthy body. I guess the argument of vitamins or no vitamins can be settled by
agreeing to both sides – eat well and take some basic vitamins. If you really
want to get the maximum out of what nutrients have to offer – do regular
vitamin blood/urine tests.
